1. The Requirement
A regional logistics operator needed to cover two different jobs with one trailer fleet:
Haul 40ft ISO containers from the port to an inland distribution centre
Carry steel beams, pipes and bagged cement on the return leg, and on days when no container is available
Their operating constraints:
Loading is by forklift and crane from all sides. A high deck would slow every turn-around, and there is no loading dock at the inland site.
Roads are mixed. Port access roads are wide, but customer yards and urban delivery points are tight — a long wheelbase is difficult to swing in.
Axle-load rules are enforced on regional routes. A third axle adds tare, directly reducing the tonnage they can legally carry.
Payload target: 30–45 tonnes, matching both container weights and steel loads.
One operator, limited drivers. They wanted a single trailer type the whole team could run, rather than separate container and flatbed units.
In short: they were not asking for the biggest trailer. They were asking for the one that could do both jobs without a second fleet.
2.Our Solution
Recommended unit: 2 Axle 40ft Flatbed Semi Trailer
|
What they needed |
How this trailer answers it |
|
Container and flatbed cargo in one unit |
ISO twist locks for 20FT / 40FT, plus an open deck for steel, pipes and bagged materials |
|
Fast loading from any side |
1,150 / 1,250 mm low platform, open-top — forklift and crane access from all four sides |
|
Tight yards and urban delivery points |
Shorter 2-axle wheelbase — tighter turning than an equivalent 3-axle |
|
Maximum legal payload |
The 2-axle layout minimises tare, lifting usable payload to 30–45 t |
|
Heavy, unevenly distributed steel |
Q345B I-beam main beam (upper 14 mm / lower 16 mm / web 8 mm) resists twisting under off-centre loads |
|
Wheeled equipment on occasion |
Heavy-duty spring-assisted manual ramps, hydraulic optional |
Configuration supplied for this project:
Axles: 2 × 13T (FUWA; BPW optional)
Suspension: heavy-duty mechanical leaf spring
Twist locks: ISO standard, container-ready
Tires: 12.00R20
Platform height: 1,150 mm
Finish: painted to the customer's fleet colour
Why this fit matters: the operator's problem was not load capacity — it was route compliance and turn-around speed. Dropping to two axles cut tare and raised legal payload, while the low deck removed the loading bottleneck. A larger 3-axle flatbed would have looked stronger on paper and performed worse on their actual roads.
